The School of Mines at Ballarat was the first school of Mines in Australia and was established in 1870. The works done to the former Ballarat Circuit Court House were overseen by Robert Davidson (architect and Surveyor) with the contractor being James Williams. Large book, green leather with red binding, numerous original invoices pasted onto the pages. The first pages of the scrapbook includes correspondence relating to the refurbishment of the former Ballarat Court House which was used as the Ballarat School of Mines from 1870. Invoices numbered from 417 ...Leonard Vivian Lansell ( 16/10/1888-31/10/1963) was the son of mining magnate, George Lansell. He married Geraldine Orme in 1911. She was the daughter of a NSW grazier. Leonard was very active in Bendigo affairs, including President of the Bendigo Benevolent Asylum, the Bendigo Chamber of Commerce, The School of Mines and the Bendigo Art Gallery. He was also on the board of directors of several mines. As well as his Bendigo commitments, Leonard and Geraldine also ran the "Chah Singh" Station, near Moulamein, NSW. Resulting from this, he was appointed a pastoral inspector in 1929. After retiring to Toorak, the family was heavily involved in the Melbourne social scene. It came from the office of John William Crawley, Junior, an engineer, architect and surveyor in private practice in Warrnambool and also the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1895 to 1935. His father, brother and son were all engineers and worked in that capacity or as Shire Secretary for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire of Warrnambool. The Shire of Warrnambool existed from 1863 to 1994. This letter book was passed on to John Crawley’s son, Rolf, engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. The letter book then came into the possession of Michael Hand who took over the private surveying business of Rolf Crawley in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society acquired the letter book, along with several other Crawley ledgers, from the Michael Hand estate. This letter book is of considerable importance as it contains the letters, maps and plans produced by John William Crawley Junior, a Shire of Warrnambool engineer for 40 years. It will be useful to researchers. This is a black hard cover letter book of 505 pages, plus an alphabetical index at the back of the book. His father, brother and son were also engineers and worked in that capacity or as the Shire Secretary for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family members recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire. The letter book was passed on to John Crawley’s son, Rolf, Engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. The letter book then came into the possession of Michael Hand who took over the private surveying business of Rolf Crawley in Warrnambool and the Warrnambool and District Historical Society has acquired the letter book, one of several Crawley ledgers, from the Michael Hand estate. This letter book is of considerable significance as it contains maps, plans, sketches and written information on the work of John William Crawley, the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool for 40 years. This is a black-covered letter book with copies of letters and field maps and plans and an alphabetical listing at the front. Some of the letters are invoices for work carried out. The leather section of the front cover has been almost completely torn away and the binding is mended with adhesive tape. There are some torn pages. The Shire of Warrnambool existed from 1863 to 1994. This accounts book was passed on to John Crawley’s son, Rolf who was the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. It then came into the possession of Michael Hand who took over the private surveying business of Rolf Crawley in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society acquired the accounts book, together with several other Crawley ledgers, from the estate of Michael Hand. This book is of considerable interest as it contains details of the 1920s accounts and payments recorded by John William Crawley Junior, the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool for 40 years. Documents, Childer's Cove, 1920-1940's
Childers Cove is situated about 15 ks east of Warrnambool in the area known as Mepunga. It is named after the shipwreck of 'The Children.The documents relate to the running of the Childer's Cove Progress Association. There are a number of social activities including gymkhanas, racing meetings, making of roads and improving with planting trees There are many names which are still familiar with the area nearly 100 years later, including Wallace, McDowall, Burleigh, Murnane, Bonnett, Abraham Laidlaw Keogh Holloway and Palmer. Some of the meetings were held at the Mepunga South School with others held at Eckers Hotel Warrnambool and some at the race course. Fundraising events were held also from athletic meetings and district school children's races. This collection of papers is representative of many small communities around Australia where people came together and worked to improve their community facilities. It therefore has strong social and historic significance.This is a collection of papers most of which relate to the Childer's Cove Progress Association. Administrative record - Sales Docket Book, Cramond & Dickson Store, Warrnambool, 1960s
This docket book has been used to enter sales from the Cramond and Dickson department store in Warrnambool and to provide the customer with a copy of the invoice. It dates from about the 1960s. John Cramond and James Dickson, two pioneer settlers in Warrnambool, established the Carmond and Dickson store in Warrnambool in 1855, initially selling groceries, drapery and ironmongery but later, at the corner of Liebig and Timor Streets, this department store sold mainly clothing and drapery. In the 1860s a Cramond and Dickson store was opened in London. The Cramond and Dickson store, a most important business in Warrnambool, operated until 1973. The docket book was printed by Lamson Paragon, a British firm that was established in Australia in 1897 and specialized in printing sales docket books with a carbon paper insert.This docket book is of interest as a memento of the Cramond and Dickson Store, one of the most significant businesses ever to have operated in WarrnamboolThis is a docket book containing 46 pages of white printed sheets bound with green tape and enclosed in a green patterned paper cover on the front and a piece of cardboard on the back. The pages have ruled black lines, red and black print and an image in red of a building. Some of the pages have been used and removed.
